Kiwix Offline Tool not starting after Ubuntu update | Kiwix Tool startet nach Ubuntu-Update nicht mehr

Unfortunately, the solution approach of “freezing” an older Kiwix version didn’t work for long. It is a mystery even to our technical helpers why Ubuntu Kiwix is updated despite the update lock. That should actually be impossible. No matter, we have already found another solution.
All BASIC images 22.04 LTS from 12/18/2023 and later use the app image kiwix-desktop_x86_64_2.3.1-4.appimage. As a user, you don't notice anything from the outside, the difference lies "under the hood".
Please be sure to use these new images for deliveries from December 18, 2023, otherwise Kiwix will no longer run after an update on site. Download it from the FTP server or, as a German hub, get a current install disk from Labdoo (Germany).
We suspect that this will remain the solution until the end of the life cycle of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, as the Ubuntu/Kiwix developers are already focusing on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS from spring/summer 2024.
Regardless of this problem with the Kiwix app, the Kiwix addon runs smoothly in Firefox (already pre-installed in the images).

Der u.a. Lösungsansatz, eine ältere Kiwix-Version "einzufrieren" hat leider nicht lange funktioniert. Es ist selbst unseren Technikhelfern ein Rätsel, warum trotz Update-Sperre Ubuntu Kiwix aktualisiert. Das sollte eigentlich unmöglich sein. Egal, wir haben schon eine andere Lösung gefunden.
Alle BASIC-Images 22.04 LTS ab dem 18.12.2023 und später nutzen das App-Image kiwix-desktop_x86_64_2.3.1-4.appimage. Von außen merkt man als Anwender nichts, der Unterschied liegt "unter der Haube".
Bitte verwendet unbedingt diese neuen Images ab 18.12.2023 für Auslieferungen, da sonst Kiwix nach einem Update vor Ort nicht mehr läuft. Ladet es euch vom FTP-Server herunter oder ruft als deutsches Hub beim Labdoo (Deutschland) eine aktuelle install-disk ab.
Wir vermuten, dass dies auch die Lösung bis zum Ende des Lebenszyklus von Ubuntu 22.04 LTS bleibt, da die Ubuntu-/Kiwix-Entwickler sich schon auf Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ab Frühjahr/Sommer 2024 fokussieren.
Unabhängig von diesem Problem mit der Kiwix-App läuft das Kiwix-Addon in Firefox problemlos (schon vorinstalliert in den Images).

As you may have already noticed, Kiwix no longer runs after updating an actual Labdoo installation. Since Labdoo is currently using Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS, but after the update Kiwix needs a module that is not available in the appropriate version in 22.04 LTS, Kiwix no longer starts.
Labdoo has informed the Kiwix development team, but no solution/patch has been provided yet.
As an interim solution, we have “frozen” Kiwix in the Labdoo BASIC images from December 7th, 2023 onwards.

Here is the workaround for techies on how to manually freeze Kiwix (but it has already been implemented in the current BASIC images as of December 7th, 2023):

• Log in as user labdoo, start synaptic
• Enter “kiwix” in the search field
• Mark “kiwix 2.2.2” in the search results
• Activate "Lock Version" in the Package ==>> menu
• Mark “libkiwix10” in the search results
• Activate "Lock Version" in the Package ==>> menu

Wie ihr vielleicht schon bemerkt habt, läuft Kiwix nach einem Update einer Labdoo-Installation nicht mehr. Da Labdoo aktuell Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS nutzt, Kiwix nach dem Update aber ein Modul braucht, das nicht in der passenden Version in 22.04 LTS vorhanden ist, startet Kiwix nicht mehr.
Labdoo hat das Entwicklerteam von Kiwix informiert, bisher wurde aber noch keine Lösung / Patch bereit gestellt.
Als Zwischenlösung haben wir daher in den Labdoo BASIC-Images ab dem 07.12.2023 ff. Kiwix "eingefroren"

In den kommenden Wochen werden wir die Entwicklung bei Kiwix beobachten. Ihr werdet es hier erfahren, wenn das Problem gelöst wurde. Danke.

• bei den Suchergebnissen "kiwix 2.2.2" markieren
• im Menü Package ==>> "Lock Version" aktivieren
• bei den Suchergebnissen "libkiwix10" markieren
• im Menü Package ==>> "Lock Version" aktivieren
