Labdoo (Deutschland) leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag für unsere NGO. Das Hub Rhein-Ruhr produziert erstmals mittels 3D-Drucker Ersatzteilen, anstatt sie teuer zu kaufen :) Abdeckungen für Festplatten, Monitorabdeckungen, Halterungen, Chassisteile - alles mit Open Source Tools wie FreeCAD, Slic3r schnell erstellt! Aber seht selbst... In wenigen Monaten werden die Anschaffungskosten wieder eingespart sein. Danke allen Helfern für euren innovativen Beitrag zum Projekt.

The first 3D printer in use at Labdoo!

Labdoo (Germany) contributes important 3D technology to our project. The first time hub Rhein-Ruhr is using a 3D printer to produce spare parts in an efficient way. Instead of buying spare parts, we can produce them now by ourselves :) So in a few months, the costs for buying a 3D printer will be saved on. Covers for hard drives, monitor covers, brackets, chassis parts - everything has already been produced!
Thanks to all involved helpers for their innovative contribution to the project.

This is excellent news! Being able to extend the life of laptops even further by using 3D printing is an amazing achievement, which will help further improve the productivity and sustainability of our systems/planet and help preserve precious natural resources. Plus how creative that is for the new generations to come and the new possibilities that arise when it comes to helping others, it's very exciting and thank you for making this possible Ralf! :)

I wonder if you know any place which we can find drawings of popular model parts (eg. Dell D630 HD cover, which we often need) or maybe if it's possible to start building and sharing such kind of database?

The reason I am asking is because 3D printers are getting more common to many household now, we have free access to some of our friends' printers. My brother-in-law printed a missing part for me before, but he doesn't live locally so thatwas a one time deal which i got a missing part printed. It will be nice if it's possible to just provide the printer owners drawing of the parts we need, and ask them to print as their contributions (grassroot:) so the volunteer doesn't need to spend a trip to pick up the missing part laptop.

Hi Wendy,
good idea. I suggest the following approach

  1. Check, if the 3D model is already available in web. There are platforms e.g. http://www.yeggi.com/, https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/3D-Models/free, https://free3d.com/3d-models/electronics, https://grabcad.com/library, http://info.traceparts.com/use-and-manage-3d-cad-models/download-free-ca... (and many more) offering ready-to-use 3D models.
  2. Next, check if a local helper has the knowledge to construct the 3D model. If so, we should think about either upload the 3D model to our FTP server or to a common platform we agree to (I would suggest the 2nd).
  3. If none of the approaches mentioned before help, the hub in need can start a call for 3D model support within Labdoo. The problem will be that this contributing hub must have exactly the same laptop model in reach, as otherwise the designer cannot measure and test the work piece. E.g. in your case we have no donated Dell D630 in stock at hub Rhein-Ruhr. May-be we can try, exchanging photos (each side of a workpiece) and exact dimensions (please in metric cm and mm...)? But if you have done that such an exact measurement it should be easy to work out a CAD model :)
  4. We all should agree to a common set of tools e.g. FreeCAD and Slic3r, so data compatibility and support from one hub to another would be facilitated. See our report https://www.labdoo.org/sites/default/files/3d_printer.pdf
  5. Hub Rhein-Ruhr will offer a training / workshop during our next year conference at Duisburg (Germany). During the conference day itself only a short presentation will be possible. But the day before of after the conference there will be a detailed workshop take place.

A Labdoo hub should do a lot of networking in their region to find missing skills for their team. Especially at a university it should be possible to find CAD skill?
