Notre Dame Girls Secondary School is located in Urua Edet Obo village and precisely in the south-south Region of Nigeria.
The school came into being as an attempt to give equal opportunity to the girl-child who was not considered worthy of education due to the cultural misrepresentations and belief. Since the beginning, the school has tried to give dignity to the girl-child, to promote girls education and to change especially the stereotypes attributed to girls in the context of our culture. Girls are seen and not heard. They are considered as not having a voice in the decision making and therefore reduced to domestic work. This creates room for abuse and violation of basic human rights. This is why our school came into existence to offer an alternative for an inclusive and a just society where everybody is respected and dignified irrespective of gender. As a school, we try to create a world without borders and to build gender bridges among people through education.
We do this through intellectual, spiritual, and socio-cultural formation process. Unfortunately, these last years have been challenging to our information Technology students due to lack of updated and useful computers. At inception in 1995 we had some computers that were quite old, but we managed that. But after 28 years of existence these computers are totally worn out and the parts are not easily found. Many of these computers are also spoiled.
Unfortunately, Information technology is still for us luxury in this context of rural area. Our girls learn about computers but some of them have never used them because they are very expensive to buy. Those whose parents are capable do provide second hands Laptops for their children but again this shows some level of imbalance in class. This poses a serious challenge during classes and practical work in our computer lab. Our computer lab exists as a building without useful or practical computers because they are quite old and out of date. This is why Peter Ekutt was shocked on his visit to our school. He came to talk to us about making research on internet and learning computer, but many have only ideas of computer don´t have the possibility to use one. This is the reason he told us that on his way back to Germany he was to enter into dialogue with Labdoo.org. Students perform well in other sciences, but we really have difficulties when it comes to practical Information technology due to lack of laptops.
