Pathfinders STEM Hub in Bamenda, Cameroon, is a dynamic and innovative hub dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation of innovators and problem solvers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses and careers. It is located in Alakuma - Bamenda in the midst of the Anglophone crisis-hit city of Bamenda - Cameroon, where over 4,000 schools have been destroyed and 850,000 school-going children are out of school, the hub is a source of hope and opportunities for children in a conflict zone.
At the core of our hub is its innovative approach to education comprised of three essential components: the first-ever STEM library, Makerspace, and Mind Sport platforms . The STEM library is a resource center, offering access to a comprehensive collection of educational materials, books, and resources in STEM subjects. Here, students and educators alike immerse themselves in a wealth of knowledge, exploring diverse topics and expanding their horizons. We recently won the 2023/2024 Community reading award from Book Aid International and received a donation of 1,000 books.
The second component of our hub is the Makerspace which provides a safer space for hands-on learning and innovation. Equipped with STEM educational kits, tools, and equipment, the Makerspace empowers students to bring their ideas to life through practical experimentation and creativity. From designing and prototyping inventions to tackling real-world challenges, students gain invaluable skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. Theses hands-on activities are focused on modules such as solar technology, robotics, drone technology, IoT, coding, programming and computer science. The donated laptops will be game changers especially in our coding and programming programs.
Complementing the STEM library and Makerspace, is our Mind Sport department which offers a unique opportunity for under-resourced children and youths the opportunity to engage in stimulating activities such as Scrabble and chess. Beyond academic pursuits, these mind sports promote cognitive development, strategic thinking, and social interaction, fostering a well-rounded approach to education and personal growth.
Together, these three components form the backbone of our hub, providing a holistic and innovative approach to education in Bamenda. We exist as a stand alone hub where we carry out activities on mondays , Saturdays and Sundays. We equally partner with community schools such as VOTECH Academy Hospital Roundabout Bamenda, , Step-by-Step school complex Ntarinkon, and orphanages such as the Misspa Nkwen Orphanage Bamenda , Cameroon.
The donated laptops will play a pivotal role in enhancing the effectiveness and reach of hub's various activities.
In the STEM library, laptops will enable our students to explore digital libraries, access online courses, and conduct virtual experiments, expanding their knowledge and understanding of STEM subjects. We really need them in using the PhET platform and other free online resources. At least 3-5 students will be able to work on a laptop.
In the Makerspace, the laptops will facilitate the design and programming of innovative projects, empowering students to bring their ideas to life through digital fabrication and coding. The laptops will support the administration and coordination of the hub's operations, enabling seamless communication, collaboration, and organization among staff and volunteers.
