Edoovillage #1607 - Kenya, Mumias East: People against Poverty

Our organization PEOPLE AGAINST POVERTY(PAPO) in Kenya is focused on empowering many young people both in and out of school to acquire computer & internet skills that can aid them improve their general academic performance, help them make informed decisions and for those out of school be equipped with I.T skills that they can use to start an income generating activity to earn a livelihood.

PAPO have an ICT project called EDUCATE INFORM WE EMPOWER (EIWE) initiated in February 2017. In August 2019 through the partnership with Global Learning and Education Network(GLEN)- ASA Germany , we got 2 volunteers from Germany who helped train teachers from our target schools and areas in basic computer packages which included introduction to computers, Microsoft word, excel, power point, publisher, video & photography editing, email, social media, website maintenance & internet research ,basic computer maintenance software installation and troubleshooting techniques. Such trained teachers are the ones we are collaborating with for our smooth implementation of the EIWE Project.

In 2019 to 2020 we have an annual target to reach over 1000 learners /students per year from 10 schools that are in rural villages away from Shianda the main town of Mumias East sub county of Kakamega county Kenya we have found out that many students either drop or graduate out of school without ever touching a computer in their life, and this places them in a disadvantaged position whenever they go out to seek for opportunities. Our goal is to use Laptops from Labdoo to empower such target young people with skills on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and unlock their potential to address both academic, social and economic challenges they may face so as to lead better lives. The ICT project we believe gives them access and familiarity to the internet & computer technology i.e. for the in school we train them on how to use internet & digital technologies to find and use the readily available academic materials, provision of the right of children to enjoy their right to access information, communication and have the access to the right technology so as to improve their academic performance and better their lives. For the out school the project will focus on how to use technology create / find jobs, do online business, participate in society and contribute to the local economy, the knowledge also provides them with a focused approach to use ICT to develop agriculture, health and other entrepreneurial related businesses

Our main objectives of the project; is providing the access and training for the young people to have computer knowledge, enhancing technology/Internet access ,to enable them access and do research, search for opportunities online and better understanding of importance of ICT for developmental projects. We also focus on training the young people with skills to repair, restore and maintain computers` hardware & software , providing entrepreneurship studies that will assist them to start up some businesses then create jobs to improve both their livelihood those of other young people and for their communities in general we also aim to create a conducive environment for them to get involved in socio-economic empowerment through agricultural, health and any other related activities for the betterment of both their personal and their communities livelihood in general.
