WEEDO - women empowering and entrepreneurship development organization is a nonprofit organization that provides education, private counseling, entrepreneurship and business skills to vulnerable adolescent girls and local women in Tanzania.
The biggest challenges in Tanzania and in the community in hat WEEDO acts is trying to address the lack of education for girls and gender inequality for girls and women, driven by cultural traditions such as FGM and expectations about women’s role in marriage. While Tanzania has experienced growth in girls’ enrolment in primary education, there is still much to be done to allow girls to complete their education and become confident, independent women who are not dependent on men for income.
Many girls drop out of school when they reach adolescence age due to early marriage or pregnancies, in part because they do not know about family planning or because of taboos about family planning. This prevents women from joining the workforce and benefiting from economic development initiatives led by the government or NGOs. By educating women about issues such as sexual violence, self-confidence, and family planning, combined with exposure to entrepreneurial activities and training in business skills, WEEDO is working to address the root cause of gender inequality by empowering women to control their bodies as well as their future economic and personal lives. Our goal is to teach them to trust themselves, to work together, and make decisions by themselves.
