Hi Bart,
Thanks for introducing the Ubuntu-Mate. I
installed it to one of the laptops and it seems to be fast. I will try to install it in a slower machine, which currently is good with lubuntu, but having problem with ubuntu desktop, and I'll let you know if the problem gets improved.

Hi Wendy,
Hi Wendy,
You'd mentioned that some of the laptop recipients expressed a desire for a more up-to-date interface than standard Lubuntu.
You can change the Ubuntu Mate ubterface to mimic the Mac, Windows and many other styles.
Go to:
System | Preferences | Look and Feel | MATE Tweak
There are lots of things you can change from this pop-up window. A pull-down window under "Panels" enables you to get a whole different look. "Redmond" gives you a Windows-like look. "Cupertino" gives you a Mac-like look. There are selections too, for openSuse, Gnome2, etc. Oh yes, and "Mutiny" makes the interface looks like the standard Ubuntu interface, Unity.
One tool that I love (as do many of the reviewers) is the Software Boutique. (Software | Administration | Software Boutique ). It enables you to install a selected number of software packages - some of the best and most popular - in a very easy way. Great for beginners, as well as for lazy people like myself.
I'll be interested in whatever feedback you have.

Hi Bart,
Hi Bart,
I just notice this thread https://www.labdoo.org/content/chalet-os#comment-956 which is similar to our discussion. What do you think about Ralf's reply? Any suggests? Maybe it's good for us we consolidate and continue the discussion there? Thanks!
Good idea, Wendy. How do we
Good idea, Wendy. How do we consolidate discussions?
I don't think there is any "right" answer about a distribution to use, and as Ralf implies, it is not a good idea to switch from one to another very often.
One other thing about switching to a Windows look - which Windows? Windows XP? Windows 7? Windows 10? They changed pretty dramatically from one version to another, didn't they? From my point of view, it's better not to try to follow Windows exactly - but to have something reasonable.
I'm close to finished with my report on Linux distributions. It's written in Google Docs. Maybe I could share it with you and get your suggestions?
