Images auf Basis Linux Mint 22 Wilma (basierend auf Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) und Labtix 3 verfügbar
Die neuen Labdoo Images for Cloning sind ab sofort auf dem FTP-Server zum Download bereit. Dabei nutzen wir wieder den MATE Desktop, der auch schon in den vorherigen Releases zum Einsatz kam. Nur ist der technische Unterbau diesmal Linux Mint in der Version 22 "Wilma", der wiederum Ubuntu 24.04 LTS nutzt. Bei der Namensgebung der Images findet ihr "24_04_LTS" auch wieder im Image-Namen, um die Kontinuität zu wahren und Helfer nicht zu verwirren.

Die Entscheidung für den Wechsel zur Mint-Distribution haben wir uns nicht leicht gemacht. Aber in Linux Mint werden einige Teile von Ubuntu nicht genutzt, die im Labdoo-Team schon länger Bedenken verursacht haben. Als weiterer Effekt sind die BASIC-Images jetzt gut 3 GB kleiner, die Ladezeit wurde stark verkürzt. Die Laptops arbeiten schneller. Die 24.04 LTS-Images haben auch nur noch 2 Partitionen, im Gegensatz zu 3 Partitionen unter 22.04 LTS.
Wilma benutzt keine Hybrid-Partitionierung mehr ( mit der zusätzlichen dritten boot.img - Partition ) die es bisher ermöglichte dass mit einer Installation im Legacy- oder UEFI-Modus gebootet werden konnte. Der Labdoo-Installer führt daher nur eine UEFI-Installation durch. Es muss daher im UEFI der Geräte sichergestellt sein, dass das Gerät nach einer Installation mit dem Labdoo-Installer in Labtix im UEFI-Mode booten kann. Sollte eine Legacy-Installation nötig sein, steht weiterhin der Labdoo Legacy-Installer in Labtix zur Verfügung. Auch hier muss man darauf geachtet werden, dass das Gerät im Legacy- ( bzw. CMS- ) Modus booten kann.
Die 22.04 LTS-Images werden noch einige Zeit auf dem FTP-Server zu finden sein. http://ftp.labdoo.org/download/install-disk/. Später werden Sie dann archiviert http://ftp.labdoo.org/download/archive/.
Für die nächsten 2 Jahre wird Linux Mint 22 Wilma auf Basis von 24.04 LTS die technische Plattform sein. Support dafür stellt die Linux Mint-Community bis 2029 bereit. Für 22.04 LTS gibt es den Support noch bis 2027.
Gleichzeitig wurden einige der zim-Archive für das Offlinetool Kiwix auf dem FTP-Server aktualisiert. Weitere können direkt aus Kiwix nachgeladen werden https://library.kiwix.org.
Noch ein Hinweis: Bei Updates bekommt ihr einen Hinweis ("Error") auf einen zu schwach verschlüsselten Key von Microsoft Teams. Eigentlich ist es eher eine Warnung vor einer Schwachstelle bei Teams, also einfach Enter drücken und weiter geht es.
Nur für Labdoo Hubs in Deutschland:
Da sich insgesamt mehrere 100 GB auf der install-disk geändert haben, bieten wir Hubs die Zusendung aktueller install-disk USB-Platten per Post an. Meldet euch bei Bedarf bitte unter contact_D (ät) Labdoo.org.

Labtix 3 Installationstool
Um Linux Mint 22 / 24.04 LTS-basierte Images und aktuelle Hardwarespenden installieren zu können, nutzt bitte Labtix 3 im jeweils aktuellen Release. Damit könnt ihr auch 22.04 LTS Images klonen.
Mit Labtix 2 könnt ihr nur die BASIC-Images auf Basis von Linux Mint 22 (24.04 LTS) ohne Content klonen. Das Clonen von 24.04 LTS-Images mit Labtix 2 ist prinzipiell weiterhin möglich, es müssen aber einige Dinge nachgearbeitet werden:
- hosts und hostname müssen händisch geändert werden,
- zusätzlicher Content muss händisch per Skript aus dem installierten System heraus nachinstalliert werden.
In Labtix 3 sind wieder eure Wünsche und Ideen eingeflossen. Der Linux-Kernel ist aktueller, damit Labtix 3 auch auf modernen Laptops eingesetzt werden kann. Die Bedienung ist aber stark an Labtix 2 angelehnt. Was in Labtix 2 ging (z.B. legacy Installation, Content installieren usw.) geht auch in Labtix 3 wie gehabt. Ihr kommt da schnell mit zurecht, versprochen.

Images based on Linux Mint 22 Wilma (based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) and Labtix 3 available
The new Labdoo images for cloning are now available for download on the FTP server. We are again using the MATE desktop, which was also used in the previous releases. Only this time the technical foundation is Linux Mint version 22 "Wilma", which in turn uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. When naming the images, you will find "24_04_LTS" in the image name again to maintain continuity and not confuse helpers.

The decision to switch to the Mint distribution was not an easy one for us. But Linux Mint does not use some parts of Ubuntu that have been causing concerns in the Labdoo team for some time. As a further effect, the BASIC images are now ca. 3 GB smaller, and the loading time has been significantly reduced. The laptops work faster. The Linux Mint 22 (24.04 LTS) images also only have 2 partitions, as opposed to 3 partitions under 22.04 LTS.
Wilma no longer uses hybrid partitioning (with the additional third boot.img partition) which previously made it possible to boot with an installation in legacy or UEFI mode. The Labdoo installer therefore only carries out a UEFI installation. It must therefore be ensured in the UEFI of the devices that the device can boot in UEFI mode after an installation with the Labdoo installer in Labtix. If a legacy installation is necessary, the Labdoo legacy installer is still available in Labtix. Here too, care must be taken to ensure that the device can boot in legacy (or CMS) mode.
The 22.04 LTS images will be available on the FTP server for some time. http://ftp.labdoo.org/download/install-disk/. They will then be archived later http://ftp.labdoo.org/download/archive/.
For the next 2 years, Linux Mint 22 Wilma (based on 24.04 LTS) will be the technical platform. The Linux Mint / Ubuntu community will provide support for this until 2029. Support for 22.04 LTS will continue until 2027.
At the same time, some of the zim archives for the offline tool Kiwix were updated on the FTP server. Others can be downloaded directly from Kiwix https://library.kiwix.org.
One more note: During updates, you will receive a message ("Error") about a Microsoft Teams key that is too weakly encrypted. It's actually more of a warning about a vulnerability in Teams, so just press Enter and continue.

Labtix 3 installation tool
To be able to install Linux Mint 22 / 24.04 LTS-based images and current hardware donations, please use Labtix 3 in the latest release. This also allows you to clone 22.04 LTS images.
With Labtix 2 you can also clone BASIC images based on Linux Mint 22 (24.04 LTS), but without content and some extra work is needed. Cloning 24.04 LTS images with Labtix 2 is still possible in principle, but a few things have to be reworked:
- hosts and hostname have to be changed manually,
- additional content has to be installed manually using a script from the installed system.
Labtix 3 again incorporates your wishes and ideas. The Linux kernel is more up-to-date so that Labtix 3 can also be used on modern laptops. However, the operation is very similar to Labtix 2. What worked in Labtix 2 (e.g. legacy installation, installing content, etc.) also works in Labtix 3 as usual. You'll get the hang of it quickly, promised.
